Graduate of the Berklee College of Music: Education/Jazz Composition double major
I create music that represents the many different musical cultures I have lived in and experienced. I am a Canadian citizen that was born in Hong Kong, raised in Ankara (Turkey), Abu Dhabi (U.A.E) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). Never having lived in my ‘home’ country, my culture is an amalgam of many different elements and inspirations, as is the music I create.
I am fascinated with the role of music in different cultures, and aspire not to be bound by the limits of genre in my creation. I do this by blending the textures of traditional jazz, wind and string ensembles with influences from various world cultures as well as my unique intersection of those. As I have travelled I have left many things behind, but my music has stayed with me, and I have grown both as a person and a musician as a result of my expatriate lifestyle. My work is written through the Jazz Idiom that I have trained in, and is largely represented by chamber groups as well as standard big band orchestrations. It is extremely important for me in my composition to create an aural atmosphere with my work. I aim for my pieces to evoke images of a place or a culture, and a journey in that setting, following a story line with a tangible and moving progression. |
