Born in Hong Kong, Canadian Liam Callan is a product of diverse and international influences having grown up in Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Italy. Raised by international educators, Liam was shaped by a multitude of cultures, each having a significant and lasting effect on his music as well as character. His musical personality was first etched out from the lessons he received from a Filipino wandering minstrel in Abu Dhabi. From there he began to write songs, and compose instrumental music, born from the influences of the cultures that he grew up in.
As a product of the American International School system and the International Baccalaureate Diploma, Liam is a lifelong learner. As an educator, Liam strives to contribute to those systems that helped to shape him into who he is today by teaching in the international school system, and continuing to work with the Berklee College of Music on various projects globally. As a songwriter he had success releasing 11 songs on iTunes and Spotify. Songs from the album have received radio play in Japan and Canada. The single "Start it Over Again" reached #1 on an Ontario radio station during a three week stint on the station's "Top 6 at 6" segment. As a composer, Liam currently writes primarily for instrumental chamber groups and large jazz ensemble. He has been a commissioned composer and visiting artist for schools including the International School of Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and New Rochelle High School (New York). Liam honed his skills as a large ensemble jazz composer, instrumentalist, and music educator at the Berklee College of Music as a Jazz Composition/Music Education double major. After graduating in 2018 he moved to Hong Kong where he currently teaches secondary music at American School Hong Kong. |
